Give 8/28 Community Mixer Canceled

Digital Giving is Ongoing for Participating Nonprofits

SARASOTA, FL – August 28 is Give 8/28, the national digital giving day for Black-led, Black-benefiting nonprofits. While the community mixer has been canceled out of an abundance of caution as the gulf coast awaits news about Tropical Storm Idalia, online giving is still happening at give828.org. Give 8/28 has been a digital giving event since its inception in 2017.

The following nonprofit organizations are participating in Give 8/28:

• Art 4 Change, which raises awareness to social issues through art and provides services and opportunities to underserved individuals and families.
• Educational Consultants Consortium, an organization that addresses issues facing impoverished communities to help support young people’s educational success through supporting whole families.
• Emerge Sarasota, advancing BIPOC young professionals through programming and networking opportunities designed to enrich, empower, and help them emerge in their careers.
• FUNducation, providing programs in STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Mathematics), with a focus on students in disadvantaged communities.
• J5 Experience Incorporated, which focuses on strengthening the mother/daughter bond as a way of promoting healthy choices that lead to success.
• Learn My History Foundation, which inspires youth through creativity, art, and education to develop leaderships skills through cultivating curiosity, collaboration, and critical thinking.
• Making an Impact, an organization that maintains a comprehensive directory of services for people in need.
• Manasota ASALH, which works to promote, research, preserve, interpret, and disseminate information on Black life, history, and culture to the global community.
• Margwine Organization, strengthening young women through proving activities and programming in a nourishing environment.
• Minorities in Shark Sciences, encouraging women of color to pursue careers in marine science.
• Multicultural Health Institute, which seeks to level the healthcare playing field by promoting, educating, and ensuring equal healthcare access and treatment to vulnerable populations.
• Newtown Nation, working to preserve Newtown, a historically Black neighborhood of Sarasota, and empower the people living there with educational resources that can propel them into better jobs and out of the cycle of poverty.
• Queens of Domestic Violence, which spreads awareness of domestic violence and provides services to families dealing with domestic violence.
• RECESS Education, which seeks to provide professional development in culturally relevant teaching to help close the achievement gap.
• Sarasota African American Cultural Coalition, which is developing a museum where residents and visitors to explore and celebrate African American art, culture, history and entrepreneurship.
• Second Chance Last Opportunity, offering life management skills classes and resources to underserved communities.
• Suncoast Black Arts Collaborative, which aims to bring visibility to the Black experience through encouraging participation in the arts.
• The Five Pearls of Excellence, an organization that provides funding for activities that support Gamma Rho Zeta Chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority as well as scholarships for high school students.
• Truly Valued, promoting positive self-esteem, education, confidence and character among youth and families.
• United Community Centers, providing support for education that helps at-risk youth develop academic success as well as community pride.
• Westcoast Black Theatre Troupe, which produces professional theatre that promotes and celebrates African American history and experience.
