Community Foundation of Sarasota County Welcomes New Board Members, Appoints Officers

SARASOTA, FL – The Community Foundation of Sarasota County has appointed new members and elected officers to its 2023-2024 Board of Directors, which governs the organization.
Marilyn Thompson, a retired human resources executive with Johnson & Johnson, will succeed Daniel DeLeo as Chair. Paul Hudson, senior managing director at Northern Trust, will serve as Vice Chair. Continuing service in their roles of Treasurer and Secretary, respectively, will be Andrew Stultz, president and owner of Atlas Building Company of Florida, and Felice Schulaner, a retired executive of Coach Inc.
Joining the Board for three-year terms are Dr. Karen Hamad, David Joyner, Patricia Mathews, and Terri Vitale.

This board is united in a passion for helping our community become a place where everyone can thrive.”
Dr. Karen Hamad is an Internal Medicine Specialist in Osprey, Florida. She graduated with honors from Tulane University School of Medicine in 1995 where she studied medicine and pediatrics, and later served as Chief Resident of Pediatrics. Having more than 28 years of diverse experience, especially in internal medicine and pediatric medicine, Dr. Hamad affiliates with many hospitals including Sarasota Memorial Hospital, where she has served as Chief of Staff. She collaborates with many other doctors, specialists, and medical groups. In her current role of Clinical Associate Professor of Internal Medicine at Florida State University College of Medicine, and through mentoring local high school and FSU Medical students, Hamad is helping to nurture the next generation of medical professionals. She has authored and co-authored numerous abstracts and articles, and has received several awards, including the Unity Award in Health Care from Sarasota Magazine in 2018.
David Joyner is the owner and president of Joyner Family Insurance, an independent insurance agency in Venice, Fla., that provides a full array of personal and commercial lines insurance solutions. Founded in January 2010, the agency maintains a strong community presence, sponsoring a quarterly referral program in which donations are awarded to local non-profit organizations. David earned both Master and Bachelor of Science degrees in accountancy from Wake Forest University and formerly was a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) in the state of Florida. He worked for many years in public accounting and as a Controller/CFO for a large real estate developer and homebuilder before pursuing the insurance industry. David has been active in numerous volunteer organizations in South Sarasota County, including the SERTOMA Club of Venice and the Rotary Futures College Resource Center at Venice High School, and currently serves as the board chair for the Venice Area Chamber of Commerce.
Patricia “Pat” Mathews is a human resources executive with more than 40 years of experience in HR management and consulting for Fortune 100 companies including Anheuser-Busch Companies and Occidental Petroleum, as well as nonprofit and public organizations. She is an industry leader who is a sought-after speaker and author of numerous articles on HR management. Pat earned a MBA in Operations Planning & Controls from Statue University of New York Buffalo, where she graduated summa cum laude, and also attended the Royal Academy of Arts & Sciences in Antwerp, Belgium. She has served on many local, state, and regional boards, such as the HR Florida Council, Manatee Habitat for Humanity, and the Sarasota Women’s Resource Center.
Terri Vitale has been a dedicated community activist for over 15 years. She has volunteered on behalf of many important community organizations, including previously serving on the board for the Community Foundation of Sarasota County from 2011-2020, as well as Forty Carrots Family Center (current board chair), Lee Wetherington Foundation (current), and the Out-of-Door Academy (current), and was president of the Notre Dame Monogram Club from 2017-2019. Her professional background includes strategic media and marketing with Leo Burnett in Chicago, Ill., and public relations officer with Shands Children’s Hospital at the University of Florida. She graduated summa cum laude with an MBA from Notre Dame. She attended high school at St. Stephen's Episcopal School in Bradenton, Fla., and trained at the Nick Bollettieri Tennis Academy (previous to IMG’s purchase of the academy).
Continuing their duties as board members are Dr. Laura Mattia, Mercedes Soler, Jeff Troiano, Janet Taylor, MD, MPH, Judge Charles E. Williams, and Mary Lou Winnick.
