The Community Foundation of Sarasota County concluded its most recent fiscal year by awarding the greatest annual amount of grants ever made by the institution and growing its managed assets to a record amount. At the same time, the 39-year-old non-profit foundation once again achieved accreditation by meeting national standards of excellence.

The Community Foundation of Sarasota County recently awarded more than $240,000 in 2018 Giving Challenge grant prizes to organizations for a variety of special “Best Of” categories during the Challenge. An event was held on Friday, June 1st at Gold Coast Eagle Distributing to announce the recipients and award them their prize certificates.

When Bill and Betsy Roe sold their tech-industry manufacturing company and left Minneapolis to live in Florida full-time, Betsy said, “Billy, we have been so blessed in our own lives, I don’t want our lives to be purely about recreation.” Not that there’s anything wrong with recreational activities, she explains, but rather they both felt a profound need to be actively giving back, making their new community a better place. To that end, they found the perfect partner in the Community Foundation of Sarasota County.

2018 Giving Challenge Raises $11.7 Million for 636 Area Nonprofits

The Community Foundation of Sarasota County’s 2018 Giving Challenge has raised more than $6.1 million through 74,682 gifts from 49,207 unique donors, with an added $5 million in matching funding from The Patterson Foundation. More than $260,000 in grant prizes will be awarded to the organizations receiving gifts from the highest number of individual donors and a variety of other “Best Of” prizes. In total, $11,733,241 was raised to support 636 local organizations located in or serving Sarasota, Manatee, Charlotte and DeSoto counties on May 1 & 2, noon to noon.

RCLA Town Hall Scholars Program Creates New Leaders

In 1981 the Ringling College Library Association had an idea to raise funds – bring in a series of some of the most noteworthy speakers from across the world to the Sarasota Audience and charge a subscription to come hear them speak. Starting from humble beginnings out of the Sarasota High School Auditorium, the Ringling Town Hall Lectures Series now reigns out of the Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall and has become one of the largest series of its kind in the country.

Area Donors Lift Season of Sharing Campaign Once Again Over the $2 Million Mark

For the fifth year in a row, the annual Season of Sharing campaign has again broken the $2 million milestone. With donations ranging from $5 to $100,000, this year’s campaign received an outpouring of gifts from more than 2,900 donors.

The Community Foundation of Sarasota County awarded $322,924 from theHurricane Irma Relief and Recovery Fund to 41 local nonprofit organizations in order to assist with recovery efforts or expenses directly related to Hurricane Irma. These expenses included: evacuation costs, lost wages, overtime costs, equipment and preparation costs, relief for clients, business property damage and lost revenue. Individual grants range from $500 to $40,000.

The sun shines brightly on our coast again, and we are hoping all our friends and nonprofit partners are safe and sound after the wake of Hurricane Irma. While we were spared the worst of the storm, a significant number of emergencies and needs have arisen from the damage, especially for our nonprofit partners and the beneficiaries they serve. We know there will be short- and long-term relief efforts to address the needs that arose from Irma's impact, and the Community Foundation’s Hurricane Irma Relief and Recovery Fund is active and ready to help.

Community Foundation Announces $1 Million Gift Towards New Players Centre for Performing Arts Complex

The Players Centre for Performing Arts received a $1 million gift toward its new state-of-the-art complex in Lakewood Ranch. The donation is the lead gift since the theatre announced plans last year to sell its current property and move to Lakewood Ranch’s newest village, Waterside, in Sarasota County.
