By / September 22, 2015

Private contributions will support new medical and wellness facility.

LONGBOAT KEY (September 22, 2015) – The Longboat Key Foundation announced that Ocean Properties Ltd. and an anonymous donor have committed $500,000 to support the planned Longboat Key Center for Healthy Living.

“These generous gifts to aid in creating the Center for Healthy Living respond to a vital community need – to restore and enhance the health care services available on Longboat Key,” said Bob Simmons, chairman of the Longboat Key Foundation Board of Advisors. “Our aim is to create a facility that not only provides needed medical and wellness services for residents and visitors, but also improves our self‐sufficiency as a community and enables residents to remain on Longboat Key as they age.”

The community’s sole primary care doctor retired in May 2014. The Foundation launched a fundraising effort in June 2015 with a goal of $1.6 million to establish the Center for Healthy Living and support a two‐year pilot. The Foundation is a component fund of the Community Foundation of Sarasota County, a 501(c)(3) non‐profit organization.

“Ocean Properties is proud to be such an integral part of this community and support this very important initiative. Health care that is easily available to residents and visitors is an essential component to maintaining the desirable lifestyle and ambiance of Longboat Key,” said Andy Berger, Vice President of Operations for Ocean Properties Ltd.

The proposed Longboat Key Center for Healthy Living will have the following characteristics:
  • Top‐notch medical and wellness services under one roof.
  • Highly qualified practitioners specializing in family medicine and other services needed by Longboat Key residents and visitors.
  • Most health insurance would be accepted by service providers.
  • A convenient location in the proposed “Town Center,” in the vicinity of Bay Isles Parkway.
  • A business model relying solely on private funds; no taxpayer dollars.
The Longboat Key Foundation Board of Advisors includes Simmons; Dave Brenner, Managing Director; Barbara Brizdle; Jim Brown; Cheryl Loeffler; Jeff Mayers, Secretary; and Warren G. Simonds, Ph. D. The organization’s founders are Tom Aposporos, Brenner and Brown.
